A new memorandum from the International Olympic Comittee has paved the way for scuba divers to participate in the 2020 Olympic games. The now-Olympic sport of scuba diving joins the likes of surfing, rock climbing, and skateboarding as recent additions to the games. The main category for the sport will involve a series of underwater relay race-style obstacle courses. As well, divers can compete in solo for longest overall open circuit confined water dive.

For those underwater photographers who think they’re destined to be an Olympian, you should know that only the world’s best divers with top-notch buoyancy and air consumption will prevail. As such PADI will offer specialty certifications to pre-qualify divers for Olympic consideration. And if you find yourself in love with the idea of competing but are more about taking pictures underwater, you can compete by sending your best images to DPG’s editorial staff for consideration to be Photographer of the Week and ’cause we are sending a press team to cover the sport of scuba diving at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.
