Prosecutors are trying to find out if there is anyone else who may have been molested by a South Bay scuba diving instructor, who has been charged with abusing a 13-year-old student during seven months of private lessons.

Bruce Fischer, of Newark, was charged in March 2020 with 22 counts of child molestation. (Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office).

Bruce Fischer, 62, has been in custody since March 12 and was arraigned March 20 on 22 counts of child molestation, according to a news release from the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office. He is being held without bail and has not yet entered a plea.

The alleged abuse of the girl began in January 2019 after private lessons at San Jose State’s Spartan Complex, but prosecutors emphasize that Fischer doesn’t work at San Jose State. The alleged abuse also occurred in Monterey County.

“Anytime there is a defendant who criminally abuses his or her position of trust and authority over minors, we need to determine if there are additional victims who have not yet come forward,” prosecutor Marina Mankaryous said. “We are here to listen and to make sure anyone who abuses young people is held fully accountable.”

Prosecutors say Fischer worked as a private dive instructor through a company called Any Water Works. His LinkedIn page says he has been affiliated with the company since 2006, providing training and certification “at all levels,” from beginner to master diver.  Fischer also teaches underwater photography and works as a senior quality engineer for new product development, his LinkedIn page shows.

Anyone who may be a victim or who otherwise has information about the case is asked to contact the San Jose State University Police Department at (408) 924-2222.
