ROCKPORT — A 53-year-old Wilmington man died in a scuba-diving accident off the coast of Rockport Thursday morning, according to Rockport police.

Emergency crews responding to a report of a diver in distress Thursday about 10:06 a.m., found Andrzej Holowenczak unresponsive on the shore of Pebble Beach, surrounded by three other divers who had pulled him to shore, according to a press release.

Holowenczak was taken by ambulance to Addison Gilbert Hospital in Gloucester, where he was pronounced dead.

Rockport Police Chief John Horvath said in a press release that a preliminary investigation determined Holowenczak was scuba diving in the area with a group of three other people.

“At some point while in the water, members of the group realized he was unresponsive and pulled him to shore where they immediately dialed 911,” Horvath said in a press release.

No foul play is suspected, but Rockport police continue to investigate nonetheless.

Additional information was not immediately released.

Holowenczak isn’t the first local diver to lose his life beneath the waves.

In May of 2009, Paul Blanchette Jr., 49, of Dracut, died while on a practice dive off the coast of Gloucester.

Blanchette was an accomplished deep-sea diver, and less than a year earlier he had become one of the first four people to ever reach the wreck of steamship Portland in 490 feet of water about 25 miles off the coast of Boston.

The practice dive that claimed his life was not a difficult one by Blanchette’s standards, and fellow divers said at the time that he suspected Blanchette likely suffered an aneurysm, stroke, or equipment failure that led to his death.
