“Creek snorkeling is like roaming around inside a natural aquarium. You see tiny underwater forests and landscapes up close. Fish, plants, aquatic insects — it’s truly another world.”

— Creeks are part of everyday life in the watershed. You can’t get to school, shops, or work without catching a glimpse of sparkling water.

And a whole world waits beneath the surface, ready to explore.

“Creek snorkeling is like roaming around inside a natural aquarium,” says Brittney Coleman, who will lead the Aug. 5 Water Wiser Kids event at Cherry Valley National Wildlife Refuge, starting at 12:30 p.m. “You see tiny underwater forests and landscapes up close. Fish, plants, aquatic insects — it’s truly another world.”

Coleman is an environmental educator with Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center, BWA’s partner in the Water Wiser Kids series. The goal of the program is to introduce children and their families to safe, fun outdoor exploration.

“People care about things they know and understand,” says Bob Heil, BWA’s executive director. “While learning about the natural world we share, children learn to love it, too.”

Snorkeling gear is provided. The program is aimed at elementary-age children, but siblings, parents, and grandparents are welcome to take part.

This event is part of the Water Wiser Kids Series sponsored by Brodhead Watershed Association, funded by a Dr. Claus Jordan Endowment Grant from Lehigh Valley Health Network Pocono Foundation.

The event is free, but registration is required and limited. Call 570-839-1120 or email info@brodheadwatershed.org. See brodheadwatershed.org/WaterWiser.html.

Ramble onFrom 1 to 4 p.m. on the same day, Brodhead Watershed Association’s Ramble will be held at Cherry Valley National Wildlife Refuge. Take part in the Ramble to see other highlights of the beautiful Cherry Valley, from a winery to organic farm to wildlife rehabilitation center. See brodheadwatershed.org/Ramble.html for information.
