OCALA, Florida — A woman who was snorkeling in a spring-fed pool escaped serious injury when she was bitten in the head by an alligator, reports say.

“Sounds bad, but it biting my head is probably the best place that it could have been because like, if it would have got my arm and that it would have got a better grip on my arm and I could have lost my arm or just like my life in general,” Marissa Carr, 20, tells Fox 35 after she was attacked by the 9-foot-long alligator. “So like, I think the head he didn’t get a good grip of it. So I think I’m genuinely just really, really lucky.”

The Miami Herald reports the incident occurred on Sunday at Alexander Springs in Ocala National Forest, which is about 60 miles northwest of Orlando. Carr and a friend were snorkeling at a spring pool.

Carr tells Fox 35 that when she surfaced, she spotted “two little eyes sticking out of the water.” It was then the alligator lunged forward and bit her.

The attack occurred so fast that she didn’t realize it was an alligator that had bit her until afterward, CarrA tells the Alamogordo Daily News. She said when got to the shore she began to feel the pain from the bite.

“It didn’t hurt bad in the moment. And then like, as I was running back and like, I saw what it was, that’s when it started hurting,” she tells Fox 35.

Carr’s injuries were not life-threatening. The Herald reports the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission responded to the area and removed the “nuisance” alligator. The agency did not say what happened to the alligator.
