Maui County fire crews and the U.S. Coast Guard continued their search Wednesday for a missing 62-year-old Wisconsin man who was last seen snorkeling in Makena Tuesday afternoon, fire officials said.
Air- and water-based searches resumed at first light Wednesday in the Chang’s Beach area, but rescue divers needed to exit the water in the morning because a large tiger shark was spotted in the area.
According to the Coast Guard, Station Maui reported to Sector Honolulu watchstanders at 3:34 p.m. Tuesday that they had received a call from the snorkeler’s family, who said he was overdue. The snorkeler was last seen rounding the point on the south end of Chang’s Beach off the Makena Surf Resort at 12:30 p.m.
Maui County fire crews were notified at 4:24 p.m. Tuesday and conducted searches by land, sea and air until darkness.
Ground searches continued throughout Tuesday night, fire officials said.
Ladder 14 from Wailea, Rescue 10 from Kahului aboard the Air One helicopter, Rescue Boat 10 from Kahului, Engine 14 from Wailea along with Ocean Safety Jet Ski crews from Kihei and Kahului all responded to the incident, along with helicopter and boat crews from the Coast Guard and Navy.
The snorkeler was wearing black shorts, no top, green and black fins and a full-face snorkel mask, according to the Coast Guard. He is described as 6 feet, 2 inches tall and weighing 195 to 215 pounds.
