A Minnesota man died while snorkeling off the coast of a Hawaiian island. 

Kaua’i Police Department reports that 64-year-old Thomas Bossert died of an apparent drowning while snorkeling with his family in the ocean fronting the Marriott’s Waiohai Beach Club on the south shore of Kaua’i. 

Authorities say lifeguards warned beachgoers of “dangerous ocean conditions” on Monday, perhaps playing a role in Bossert becoming separated from his family while snorkeling, the police department said. 

Bossert was found motionless and unresponsive in the water by a local resident who was swimming in the same area. Lifeguards reached him within 30 seconds of being signaled for, and they performed CPR on Bossert as soon as they got him to shore. 

Local firefighters arrived at the scene and performed high performance CPR until medics arrived and attempted advanced resuscitation efforts. 

Bossert was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead. 

a grief counseling service provided support to Bossert’s family at the hospital and the Visitor Aloha Society of Kaua’i is also assisting the family. 

An autopsy has been scheduled to determined an exact cause of death.
