The scuba diver who died Wednesday during Florida’s first day of its annual lobster mini-season was identified Thursday as 70-year-old Peter Mendez of Davie, according to a news release from the Broward County Sheriff’s Office.

Mendez was hunting for lobster Wednesday with a group of other divers when he disappeared, according to sheriff’s officials.

The Hillsboro Beach Police Department requested assistance from the Broward’s Sheriff’s Office marine and aviation units to search for Mendez.

Recreational divers spotted Mendez at the bottom of the ocean just before 1 p.m. Wednesday and called for help, said Veda Coleman-Wright, director of Broward County Sheriff’s Public Information Office.

Rescue units responded but could not find Mendez until a commercial diving boat found him at approximately 3:50 p.m., Coleman-Wright said.

Mendez was transported to the Sheriff’s Office marine substation at the Alsdorf Park boat ramp.

According to Coleman-Wright, no foul play is suspected.
