While accompanying a whale-watching tour off the coast of Maui, Hawaii, on February 3, first mate Emma Nelson got an up close and personal look at a humpback whale giving birth. A small caudal fin can be seen appearing from the female whale in this underwater footage captured by Nelson, who was scuba diving near the tour boat. Toni Colombo, of Ultimate Whale Watch, the company that was running the trip, described the spectacle as “the FIRST TIME this has been recorded on video; no whale birth has ever been recording on film!” Writing on Instagram, Nelson described it as “monumental.” “Yay for science and new discoveries,” she wrote.
