MIDLAND, Texas (KOSA) – Typically, deserts and water don’t mix around here, but a local scuba gear and certification shop is changing the game. Desert Reef Outfitters, owned and operated by ocean enthusiasts John and Lacey Kimberly, is making waves with their unique offerings in scuba gear, certification(s), and diving experiences.

Founded, owned, and operated by John and Lacey Kimberly, Desert Reef Outfitters, is not your typical shop in a desert town. They offer a full range of scuba services, including retail sales of gear, organized dive trips, 10+ certification courses, and even hydrostatic testing.

“We are a full retail store. We also put together dive trips and we try to offer a minimum of two a year, depending on how long they are and the price differences. We also do certification. And then, in the back part of the building we also do hydrostatic testing.”

What began as a small group of divers has now grown into a vibrant family-type community of approximately 40 diving enthusiasts.

“Lacey and I both are blessed with the dive community that we’ve created. That we’ve had a part in building.”

Former 21-year Navy diver John Kimberly, initially thinking his diving days were behind him, found a new passion after his son’s interest in scuba diving reignited his love for the sport. Thanks to the support of his wife Lacey, they decided to dive back into the waters together, quite literally.

“I am blessed with not falling through with what my thought process was 5 years ago. I ended up getting him into scuba diving and we decided we were going to move forward together.”

After obtaining his Master Diver certification, John and Lacey acquired the assets of another diving company and founded Desert Reef Outfitters. Approaching their 1-year anniversary next month, they’ve become a go-to destination for anyone interested in exploring the underwater world.

Desert Reef Outfitters offers a range of diving courses, from open water and advanced diving to rescue diving and emergency first responder courses. Their experienced team ensures that every diver feels confident and safe underwater, overcoming any initial fears associated with diving.

“All the fears that everyone else has before they go diving, I had those, and now when you get in the water you don’t have those fears.”

Trainings are conducted twice a month, alternating between locations in Midland and Balmorhea Park.

“I will be making sure that you’re getting out of that pool, or out of Balmorhea, or out of the ocean, a better diver after you’ve been in the water with us.”

There’s also an exciting opportunity to join their team dive trip to Fiji this summer, making scuba dreams a reality starting right here in our desert community.
