An Alabama man is being mourned after the U.S Coast Guard suspended a 68-hour search for him off the coast of Guam.
U.S. Coast Guard Forces Micronesia have not publicly identified the man, but family and friends on social media say it is Clay Harris, 50, of Fort Payne.
According to authorities, Harris and a friend were snorkeling Sunday off a beach on the western side of Guam, a U.S. territory in the western Pacific Ocean.
The initial distress call for two swimmers came to 911 dispatchers from eyewitnesses on the beach at 4:24 p.m. One swimmer returned to shore.
Responders later found snorkel gear consistent with what the missing man described as having used.
The U.S. Coast Guard, Guam Fire and Rescue, U.S. Navy Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron-25, and other responders deployed boats, watercraft, a helicopter, and drones to search for Harris. However, searchers contended with light winds and showers, then heavy rains and gusty winds. The search was suspended at sundown Wednesday.
In all, crews carried out 10 separate searches covering an area of 368 square nautical miles.
“On behalf of our team, I extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the missing snorkeler,” Cmdr. Greg Sickels said.
