A young man has drowned while snorkeling at South Bruny near Lighthouse Bay.

Tasmania Police were alerted to the incident around 2.45pm on Sunday afternoon.

Police and Ambulance stationed on Bruny Island and a Westpac Rescue Helicopter responded to the incident.

Unfortunately the male was unable to be revived after being retrieved from the water.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
