CHEBOYGAN COUNTY, MI — Police have released the name of the diver who died shortly after exploring the wreck of the SS Cedarville in the Straits of Mackinac over the weekend.

Jesse Tabor, 44, of Owosso, was pronounced dead Sunday, Aug. 12, at Mackinac Straits Hospital in St. Ignace. Police are awaiting the results of an autopsy, which could take up to two months, to learn the cause and manner of the man’s death.

Tabor’s dive equipment will be examined within the next week or two, according to police. 

“At this stage in the investigation it appears to be a tragic diving accident,” said Cheboygan County Sheriff Dale Clarmont in a statement.

Police were dispatched to a diving accident around 12:45 p.m. Sunday in the Straits of Mackinac. They were notified that CPR was in progress and that a diver was being transported to the hospital in St. Ignace.

An investigation determined that Tabor was with Michael Petchauer, 64, of Holland, and Phillip Storms, 58, of Hudsonville.

Tabor and Petchauer made two trips down diving and rising in tandem. On the second dive, both men surfaced when one diver noticed the other struggling and assisted him into the boat. 

Once on the boat, the men called 911 and headed to Mackinaw City, where an ambulance was waiting to transport Tabor. 

The incident remains under investigation by the Cheboygan County Sheriff’s Office, which was assisted by Emmet County EMS and the Mackinaw City Police Department.
