The of the upcoming The Little Mermaid, Halle Bailey, shows off her scuba diving skills in a new video. The 21-year-old actress is set to portray Disney’s first live-action iteration of the underwater princess, Ariel. Following in the footsteps of the 1989 original animated film, the new feature will again focus on the young mermaid and her longing to step on land.

Bailey’s casting was announced back in 2019 alongside co-stars Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, Awkwafina as Scuttle, Jacob Tremblay as Flounder, and Javier Bardem as King Triton. British pop superstar Harry Styles was also touted to join the cast as Prince Eric before scheduling conflicts ultimately led to Jonah Hauer-King claiming the role. The movie, helmed by seasoned Disney director Rob Marshall, follows the success of several other live-action remakes for the studio, including the likes of Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King and Mulan. Other adaptations currently in the works include Snow White and Pinocchio.

Now in a video posted to TikTok (via Instagram), Bailey has shown that her prowess under the water extends beyond the movie set. Surrounded by coral reefs, Bailey looked to be completely at ease under the sea, despite being strapped in scuba gear. Waving at the camera while moving gracefully through the water, Bailey paid subtle homage to her upcoming Disney role with a mermaid emoji in the video’s caption: “hello from the middle of the indian ocean 🌊😉💘🧜🏽‍♀️” Check out the post below:

The post is the most recent tropical snapshot the Grown-ish star has posted in recent days. Though production on The Little Mermaid wrapped in the UK in mid-2021, it seems Bailey is continuing to channel her inner Ariel in her personal life. Calling her casting a “shocker” during a recent interview, it seems reasonable to assume that Bailey would want to live in her new Disney persona for some time, celebrating the shift from the traditional red hair and pale skin which Ariel has long been confined to.

Although Disney continues to develop additional live-action remakes of its classic films, The Little Mermaid is perhaps one of its most highly anticipated. While its production, like many in the past two years, may have been hampered by delays, Bailey assures fans that the project will ultimately be worth the wait, teasing numerous behind the scenes pictures of her upcoming transformation. Though an official first look at her iteration of Ariel is yet to be revealed, fans can hopefully expect further sneak peeks at the film ahead of its release on May 26, 2023.
