Diver dies after exploring shipwreck in Straits of Mackinac

According to UpNorthLive.com, the Cheboygan County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident, which occurred Sunday, Aug. 12 around 12:42 p.m. Two divers made two trips underneath the water, rising in tandem.

CHEBOYGAN COUNTY, MI – A diver died shortly after exploring the wreck of the SS Cedarville in the Straits of Mackinac over the weekend.

According to UpNorthLive.com, the Cheboygan County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident, which occurred Sunday, Aug. 12 around 12:42 p.m.

Two divers made two trips underneath the water, rising in tandem. However, after surfacing from the second dive one diver noticed the other struggling and helped him into the boat.

The victim, who is from downstate, was taken to Mackinac Straits Hospital in St. Ignace where he was pronounced dead, according to the Northern Michigan TV station.

An autopsy will be done to determine the cause of death. The diving equipment will also be inspected.
