It’s not exactly going out on a limb, but respected Apple expert Ming-Chi Kuo predicts next year’s Apple Watch Series 6 will be offer better performance than the current one, and include improved wireless speeds. Still, with the launch about likely 10 months away, it’s not surprising that only a few vague generalities can be said about Apple’s next wearable.
What’s more interesting is a mention of enhanced water resistance that raises the possibility of taking this device to the bottom of the sea.
Kuo, an analyst with TF International Securities, predicts the circuit boards used in Series 6 will be made of liquid crystal polymer (LCP), according to MacRumors. That’s the same material he thinks the budget iPhone debuting this winter will use for its antenna.
Kuo’s predicted wireless performance boost for the sixth-generation Watch could come from its antenna being embedded in LCP too.
Apple Watch Series 6: Better, stronger, faster
It’s easy to say “duh” about the next Watch having better performance than its predecessor, but Apple’s wrist computers aren‘t like its handsets: they don’t get faster every year. The new Series 5 is no quicker than last year’s model, as it uses the same CPU.
Still, it’s because the latest model didn’t get a speed bump that so many people believe the Apple Watch Series 6 will see a performance increase.
Apple says the current Series 5 model is “designed with swimmers in mind.” However, it’s not up to “scuba diving, waterskiing, or other activities involving high-velocity water or submersion below shallow depth.” Kuo’s prediction that the 2020 watchOS wearable will have increased water resistance could mean that this warning will no longer be necessary.
If Apple follows the schedule it’s held for several years, Apple Watch Series 6 launch next September.
