A prominent western Kentucky attorney drowned while snorkeling in the Virgin Islands, a local newspaper reported.

The Virgin Islands Daily News reported that Kenneth Haggard was visiting St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, with family when he drowned while snorkeling at Sapphire Beach. Bystanders recovered Haggard from the water and performed CPR until a first responder arrived, a spokesman for St. Thomas Rescue told the newspaper. That responder, who reportedly arrived at the scene within minutes, also performed lifesaving measures before emergency medical responders took Haggard to a hospital via ambulance in critical condition. A police spokesman confirmed Haggard’s death to the newspaper.

Haggard’s law office is in Hopkinsville, WKDZ-FM in Cadiz, Kentucky, reported, but he has ties further west as well. He graduated from Ballard Memorial High School in 1977, the radio station reported, and he earned his bachelor’s degree at Murray State University in 1981 before going on to earn his juris doctorate at the University of Kentucky College of Law in 1984.

Honors Haggard received listed on the Haggard Law Office website include recognition as a Kentucky Super Lawyer, a Kentucky colonel, and a Kentucky Bar Foundation life fellow.

He was 65 years old.
