Safety officials are asking swimmers and snorkelers to take a break at some of the island’s shores because of dangerous ocean conditions.

The National Weather Service issued a high surf advisory for the north- and west-facing shores of Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau through 6 a.m. Saturday. Ocean Safety Bureau officials have observed surf of 12-20 feet.

Entering the water in these areas during the advisory is hazardous. Beachgoers, swimmers and surfers should use caution when entering waters. The high surf conditions include strong breaking waves, shore breaks and strong rip currents that make swimming difficult and dangerous.
